The Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) is now accepting entries for its 2010 Festival of the Arts competitions.
Entries for the Performing Arts including dance, music, drama, traditional folk forms and speech as well as the National Children’s Gospel Competition will close on Friday, January 29. Applicants in the Jamaica Gospel Song, Jamaica Festival Song and Miss Jamaica Festival Queen Competitions will have until Friday, February 26 to submit their entries. Entries for the other programmes, including the National Visual Arts, the Culinary Arts and the Jamaica Creative Writing Competitions will be accepted later this year.
Competitions are open to all Jamaicans; however age restrictions apply in the entertainment arts programmes. The age requirement for the Children’s Gospel competition is 6- 15 years, while only women aged 18 - 25, are invited to participate in the Miss Jamaica Festival Queen Competition.
Entrants in the Jamaica Gospel and Festival Song competitions must be a minimum of 16 years old to qualify for entry.
“We want to encourage persons to develop and showcase their talent through the various competitions we offer” says Dorrett Thaxter, JCDC Programmes Director. “Persons from community and other groups are being targeted for entries as we continue to expand the scope and widen involvement in our programmes”, Thaxter also noted.
